Come live on a permaculture property in Wellington

After 3 years our tenant has moved out after buying his own land.

Our 2 bedroom cottage is available on our property in Upper Hutt.

It would suit a single person or a couple, perhaps moving home needing somewhere to live while they find a home and make a life. Or you want to try living of the land for a while, see what its like.

Its a super tranquil place, you can feed the chickens and garden as much as you like. Grow your own food, take from the orchard.

$260 per…

Creating Intersect events

Intersect events are pretty special. The people that go are generally amazing. You can trust that anyone that it occurs to you to speak to will be interesting and friendly. Last year was the first time I attended any Intersect events, and I was hooked. Here’s what we got up to in Wellington, on the first Monday of the month:

We started off the year with a bang of Be Amazed events. The idea is to present a couple of amazing things, which sets the scene for amazing conversations…

A meaning-less life: on purpose

My life has less meaning than it did several years ago—but it feels much more purposeful.

I’m reflecting on the differences between meaning and purpose. We all create meaning through the stories that we tell ourselves. I’m doing this right now. The word “meaning” has roots in an older word related to mind. So the…

Sustainability and self-interest

Ethics is an important part of sustainability, and many of us think business' emphasis on self-interest is a bad thing.

After the coverage of recent international financial crises and the Occupy Movement, and some jumbled thoughts about ethics and sustainability, I felt the need to learn a bit more about ethics in business.

Unfortunately, I'm a designer, not an ethicist or economist. I had to go away and do some research, so here's a summary of what I…

Making change: individual and collective action

It's really great to live according to our values.

If we're worried about climate change, it's great to choose to bike or take the train, or think twice about unnecessary journeys.

If we're concerned about waste, it's important to do our bit and reduce or recycle that waste.

Choosing to do good - try and do less bad, as by our very nature humans weigh on our planet - is important, and can also help us do better. Every bit does count.

But it's also important, I…

A very short introduction to the referendum on New Zealand's voting system, 26 November 2011

On a sunny Saturday morning this 26 November, you can wander down the road, pop into a polling booth, and contribute to our democracy.

(First, though, you've got to be enrolled to vote. You can check that out here.)

In that booth there’ll be two bits of paper.

One bit of paper is orange. That’s to vote in the election. You’ll be asked two things. Firstly, what person you want to represent your electorate in…

SUSANTA BISWAS Documentaries on the success of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act

Susanta Biswas, a reputed documentary film maker from Kolkata, completed the making of two documentary films on the success stories under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act, popularly known as NREGA. The Act aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household who volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

The dark side of your favorite smartphone

http://www.phonestory.org/#about

I love the irony of criticizing the bad side of this technology on it's own platform.

Why can't the supply chain/economy/consumers/system be more equitable? Why can't _everyone_ take some responsibility and be excellent to each other?

We all demand technology, but how can we make it equitable and sustainable?

It's complex for sure....

Humans bite back

Think quite a few people have swallowed a fly or two while riding their bikes, willingly or unwillingly, but this goes a bit further: Girl meets Bug. I have read a lot about entomophagy in the news recently, and there seems to be a real benefit in raising small life stock, e.g. higher protein to feed ratio compared to beef.

Skincare ingredients + DIY skincare project

Over the past year I've been making my own skincare products. I was really enjoying a few natural products I'd picked up but the price tag that came with them wasn't so enjoyable. After bits of research I worked out how to make a few products, and these days I can make all my skincare I use. I'm working on make-up, but that's another story. Since doing this I…

Inspired to minimize waste.. and get composting!

I recently read an article 'could you survive with just four beauty products?'. The article is an interview with Bea Johnson from The zero waste home. Bea's yearly waste is less than the typical American's daily waste. This amazed me and I started thinking of ways to minamize my waste.

First came the re-using of bottles, all sorts of…
