Profile Information

Date of Birth
November 27, 1984
About Me:
I am a 24 year old semi-professional hippie. I'm currently writing a history of the Christchurch City Council's involvement in public health, living in Auckland and looking for more permanent and sociable work in the public health field (not forthcoming during a recession or with a National government).

I want to live more fully and leave things (people, places, the world) a little bit better than when they first met me. I try to resist tokenism, but often fail. I try to live consciously and spread niceness where people don't expect it. I aspire to get to know my neighbours, but we move too often. I try to do my part for those that society has left behind and tries to ignore. I try to get political and make submissions to select committees and sign petitions and email politicians. I try to believe that my tiny alteration of the statistics re public opinion counts for something.

I bike. I ride busses and ferries. I hate Auckland's transport system. I love op-shops, clothes swaps and fair trade options. I make most of my own cleaning and personal care products. I am currently on a dirty hippie no-shampoo experiment, which my husband doen't like very much. I try to cook delicious, healthy, seasonal food and attempt to grow my own. My vegetarian experiment ended with craving meat and an iron deficiency. I am a geek. I wish I lived in the 1920s-1950s. I try to live like Jesus, not necessarily like other Christians.
Areas of interest and capabilities:
Expertise?
Well, I have an undergraduate degree in political science and a post graduate diploma in public health. My masters thesis is on orienting urban planning and high-density housing for health and social wellbeing, and how to work with political processes/the private sector/economic incentives to achieve this... whew. A big topic.

So I guess I have some level of 'expertise' in public health, local government, equity, advocacy, FRIGGIN REPORT WRITING, socioeconomic and ethnic issues, urban design, healthy housing and health promotion.

I am also interested in:
- Public and active transport options
- 'Sustainable living' (aspiring to)
- Biodiversity
- FOOD (organic gardening w heirloom varieties, harvesting, storing, cooking, eating and socialising over it, as well as food politics and nutrition...)
- Building community
- Celebrating life
- Creativity
- Love

Hi Kelly,
Hope you're having a good week.
Do you ideas about what you want for Auckland?
There is an event next Tuesday evening asking these questions, and is also a good way to meet up with other purposeful people in Auckland.
It will require putting critique of other people's ideas forward and exploring our own.
Be great to see you there.
