Intersect presents... Emergence at Southern Cross Lounge

November 7, 2011 from 6pm to 7:30pm
What power does an individual have to effect the behaviour of the whole? Can the motivations of individuals move communities? Where do social movements begin? These are poignant questions for our times. Whatever we strive to do as individuals we find ourselves pitted against movements and forces that dwarf us – climate, economics, social and political forces. At Intersect’s Emergence evening we will explore these questions by investigating some examples from nature. In nature we can find…See More

Tell Us a Story Events at Victoria University

October 10, 2011 at 5pm to October 20, 2011 at 9pm
“Tell Us a Story” is Victoria University’s very first story-telling challenge and workshop series for Post Graduates in the Science and Engineering Faculties! The aim of this challenge is to woo the audience with stories of inspiration, passion, heart-ache, struggle, love – all the things scientists aren’t allowed to mention in academic papers. These are not your ordinary science presentation events! They are bound to make you laugh, cry or unravel in bamboozlement! We want *you* to get…See More

Profile Information

Date of Birth
April 15, 1983
About Me:
I'm a 'science communicator' by profession. I specialise in translating the incomprehensible murmerings of scientists into language and concepts we can all understand. My background is in physics – I did an Honours degree at Victoria University in Wellington before completing a Masters in Science Communication at Imperial College in London.

I now work as freelance science communicator in my most beloved hometown, Wellington. I work from my office bedroom in Island Bay where I spend large tracts of time gazing out to sea. My clients include the MacDiarmid Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials; BlueFern, Canterbury University’s supercomputing centre and 'Viclink', a branch of Victoria University that helps staff and students commercialise their research.

I was recently awarded the ‘Prime Minister’s Science Media Communication Prize’, a new award devised by the government to raise the profile of science in NZ. I plan to use it to use this opportunity to develop my skills in speaking and presenting and to encourage more cross-sector collaboration within NZ.
Areas of interest and capabilities:
Science – especially biomimicry and nanotechnology - It fascinates me that wherever you look in the universe you can find exquisite detail, beauty and order. I love having my mind blown by the unfathomable scales in Nature from the impossibly small details in nanotechnology to the incomprehensible hugeness of astronomy. I’m inspired to learn about how scientists and engineers are beginning to mimic the superior engineering skills of nature to address some of our big environmental problems.

In New Zealand I feel that science is key to our future environment, culture and prosperity. I feel a sense of creative rebellion here and I’ve been inspired by the optimistic and pioneering spirit of the young scientists and science entrepreneurs who I’ve met around the country. I feel that by focusing on science we can help build a new and positive sense of kiwi identity centred on ingenuity and intelligence rather than just rugby and sheep.

The Ripple Effect - Thoughts on the specialness of Aotearoa

What would happen if you lifted New Zealand up out of the ocean one calm windless day and dropped it back in again? Imagine the ripples it would create over the vast expanse of water as it plunged back in – concentric circles

expanding outwards over the ocean, lapping on the shores of Australia,

Asia, Africa, America, Europe….…

Thanks for adding me as your friend. I love science too, and what you say about it is true. These are exciting times for what science can, and is doing, for society and understanding.

Hey Elizabeth
Really nice to meet you too and to hear your vision - also to get Rebecca Glover's link. Let's have a coffee in a fortnight - we are away next week. I was just looking at a blurb I wrote for a conference in Norway in September and it reminded me of our conversation... see if you can make any sense out of it! Cheers

- the intro follows:

As an artist and curator I am interested in making socially provocative work that sits on the threshold between disciplines. I believe that the failure of much climate change negotiation is due to beliefs in arbitrary boundaries. In my work I seek to challenge the boundaries that create ‘them’ and ‘us.‘ As well as presenting some earlier video work I will talk about two series of works I have co-curated. Dialogues with Tomorrow was a series of interdisciplinary lectures held in a mainstream theatre in Wellington April -June 2010 addressing climate change.
