New Zealand needs more people conducting local research. The drive to develop can be restricted or stopped if knowledge is known about special habitats and species in an area. In addition without research we cannot put this knowledge in the public eye to have serious debates about our impact on the environment.

2010 was the International year of Biodiversity

2011 is the International year of the forests

So called indicator species (species that can be used to determine if change is happening in certain environments), flagship species (species that are highly recognised and loved and thus often used in public campaigns) and keystone species (species that play a critical role in maintaining the structure of an ecological community affecting many other plants and animals in an ecosystem) are really important weapons to utilise in the fight to put the environment on the map. Too often the environmental impact is an after thought particularly in areas that are not high conservation priority. In DOC or Council high conservation areas are known as 'Key Native Ecosystems' KNE's or  'Significant Natural Area's SNA's.

2011 National cats indoors campaign? UPDATE: This campaign has been talked about but that is all. So i'm assuming this is on hold. I have conducted some research on domestic cats (Feb 2011) and and hope to gather some more research using hi tech equipment in September.
