Controlling ivy

I have extended a weed control area on Mt Vic and am trying to get the ivy off some old pine trees. Usually cutting the branches kills the vine above but this time it hasn't! Horror. These are really…Continue

Anyone want to help with some planting around Mt Vic next month?

Not to worry after a couple of weeks all the ivy has finally died - not a new more resilient plant afterall!

Arent all the plants growing well this year - just the right amount of rain and warm.

Fantastic to be actually doing something! The Owhiro Bay stream project is looking good. There are a number of other action sites around Wellington including around Tapu te Ranga marae, Ngaio gorge, Thorndon near motorway, etc. I have a project going in the town belt around Mt Vic if anyone is interested in hooking into that? Mainly weed pulling to promote Wellington natives to grow, and a bit of planting.

I'm currently living in Victoria, Canada and have had an amazing time here learning about the different ecosystems and the challenges that landbase actioners here face. Unsurprisingly many of the issues faced here are similar to back home: difficult relationships with city councils; uneducated public (eg dumping garden waste in forest areas and poisons into storm water systems); unregulated development etc etc etc. I've been working with Friends of Mount Douglas Park Society removing invasive English Holly and Ivy for a couple of hours each week. This group does an amazing amount of work, especially when most of the members are retirees. They have also done a huge amount of stream restoration/bio-engineering in an effort to get Coho salmon to return to the Douglas Creek. Check them out here: http://www.mountdouglaspark.ca/

Also if anyone is having trouble pulling out some tough weeds (I'm thinking gorse, juvenile tobacco plant) check out weed wrenches: http://www.weedwrench.com/weedwrench/
I've used all three sizes and they are excellent but I've never seen them in NZ.

I'll be moving to Wellington shortly, and very keen to get out and about and make a difference, meet some people, and get to continuing the movement in Welly. Any ideas of volunteer groups etc (obviously Owhiro sounds good)?

I've been working for an organisation called Conservation Volunteers (www.conservationvolunteers.co.nz) for 2 years, there's no office in Wellington at the moment, but I hope that may change soon - so any projects people have in the pipeline, would love to hear. CV come at conservation differently - we recruit volunteers from around NZ & internationally and bring them to projects throughout Australia & NZ.

So get thinking and give me a holler. Cheers!

I spent four and a half hours today with about ten others from Friends of Owhiro Stream clearing weeds from around plantings and planting 150 new seedlings. They have been together for eight years but there is still plenty more work to do and hundreds of trees to still plant. Get involved if your in Wellington! http://www.owhirostream.org.nz/

What a cool group, much called for I think.
I will follow with interest what people are doing and try to join in where ever possible. Thanks so much Andrew!

So to kick it off, yesterday I spent some time down at Owhiro Stream in Wellington just beside the turn off to Happy Valley Dump collecting rubbish out of the stream that would otherwise choke the stream and eventually end up in Taputeranga Marine Reserve. I got three black-sacks full of trash in just under an hour, and there is plenty more to go!
