he New Zealand Centre for Sustainable Cities is coordinating an all day planning meeting on the 28th of April (9.30-4.30, Landcare Research, Lincoln). The aim is to bring together the community of researchers working on the science of urban sustainability in New Zealand and discuss ways in which we might effectively support Christchurch’s regeneration over the short and medium term. This will include identifying the range of issues that will need to be considered in rebuilding Christchurch, and the knowledge, data and research capability that we collectively have to offer Christchurch. By the end of the day we hope to have developed a briefing paper for the Government and Christchurch Council. Our intention is to go beyond the membership of Sustainable Cities to do this. The day may also include a public seminar and we have asked Ian Athfield, Rod Oram, Anna Stevenson and Susan Krumdieck to speak. Contact Jan: http://sustainablecities.org.nz

Apart from 'Resilient Futures' there are several other formal meetings on rebuilding Christchurch, including the first of a series being hosted by Green MP Ken Graham (see http://www.greens.org.nz/events/public-meeting-visions-christchurch... ) and a TEDxEQChCh presentation on 21 May (see http://tedxeqchch.com).

Comment by Suzanne Vallance on April 5, 2011 at 16:23 Hi again,
Unfortunately the price tag is out of my hands and reflects the cost of the room and someone to manage the registration process. I would be keen to hear from anyone out there who has a vision and woud like an actual space to come together to share their vision. We could probably do this in a much more cost effective way. Charles Kelly, one of thh guest speakers at the conference has 'green recovery' experience, whilst others (including myself) will discuss how recovery now can help mitigate the effects of 'long emergencies' like peak oil, sea level rise and an aging population.
Comment by Rex Verity on April 5, 2011 at 15:12 Folk are taking wonderful flights of imagination regarding the reconstruction of Christchurch. I think some fundamentals are being overlooked, including ... Antarctic and Greenland ice is melting and raising sea levels. The oceans are also expanding as their average temperature rises. This is a slow and inexorable process that will continue for centuries now, even if humankind stops adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere before key tipping points are breached. Without gargantuan earthworks most of Christchurch will be inundated. What timeframe do we build for? Is Christchurch to be a city that thrives for at least several more centuries, or a city from which people have to progressively retreat in the coming decades and centuries. Addressing these issues will determine how much (money, time, love, resources) we invest in creating a brilliant-to-live/work/play-in city, and the type of development pursued.
I expect that, apart maybe from the hills, Christchurch will be abandoned sometime before 2200. Planning should begin for a very different urban pattern for the South Island (actually, for all parts of the planet). Maybe Christchurch reconstruction should be designed with buildings relocatable, either as modules or by deconstruction, removal and reconstruction. And with buildings self-reliant for sewage disposal rather than dependant on expensive and vulnerable sewer lines.Intersect's wiki has heaps of resources for members
