Flightless Birds

We love the freedom of cheap air travel but we love our climate (and the people it supports) much more. This group is dedicated to the exploration of low carbon travel and the joys that come from choosing quality over expedience.

You might have already seen this "trick", but I thought it was worth posting evidence that Google is on our side....

1. Go to Google Maps and click on Get Directions.
2. Write USA as your start point.
3. Write Japan as your destination.
4. Go to the 31st point on your route

... another reason to avoid air travel.

Please, let's make sure this doesn't happen in New Zealand.

Here's something provocative... in fact I'm wary of even adding it here because it hurts to watch:

A 2 minute video of polar bears falling from the sky. The brief for this video was that they wanted to confront people with the impact that short-haul flights have on the climate. They used Polar Bears because they're a well understood symbol of the effect that climate change is having on the natural world.

What do you reckon? I personally don't find this approach appealing. I'm more a fan of attracting people to better alternatives than showing people violence... but I've got to admit that this brutal approach certainly gets attention and sticks in the mind. Watch it if you dare...

Just about to celebrate my first year as a flightless bird... I have travelled the length of the country several times by car, bus, train and boat. Now that I am used to the timeframe, I have found that I can sit back and relax. I have made sock monkeys, read books, met interesting people, seen parts of New Zealand that I would never have known existed.

Of all the experiences, my favorite was on the double decker day bus from AKL to WGN yesterday. Here was my view:

and here was a little friend I met on one of the breaks:

I am sold on land based travel, and I am looking forward to another year of clipped wings!

Today on Lambton Quay, I took action on climate change. Here's the elephant in the room.

Hi Patrick

Your low carb trip sounds brilliant.

Our views on low carb travel may be an antithesis to everything most people aspire to. Yet, I suspect many other people see the value in it if we shared our opinions to a wider forum.

What is the best way to do this?

Increasing scarcity of 'cheap' oil and resulting increases in oil prices will affect tourism, just as they will affect every other aspect of modern life. The question of what the economic, social and cultural implications for tourism and the world might be in light of dwindling availability of oil is more relevant than ever. This presentation will provide an overview of the concept of peak oil and tourism's dependency on cheap oil. Research results from a current FRST funded project will be reported to provide a better understanding of New Zealand tourism's vulnerability to oil prices. Risk minimising strategies will be discussed within the wider context of 'preparing for the future'.

Dr Susanne Becken is an Associate Professor at Lincoln University. Susanne is currently leading two government-funded programmes in New Zealand, namely 'Tourism and Oil' and "Preparing the Tourism Sector for Climate Change". Susanne is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, International Tourism Review, and Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events, and she is a Resource Editor for Annals of Tourism Research. She co-authored (with Prof. Hay) a book on tourism and climate change, and acted as a contributing author to the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report. At the UNFCCC conference in Bali, Susanne was an invited member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation delegation. Susanne has undertaken consultancy work for organisations within New Zealand and internationally. For further details contact helen.jiang@vuw.ac.nz or telephone 04 463 5720

I'm organising a low-carbon holiday for ~20 friends this summer: the Wairarapa Gourmet Cruise.
Day one: Train from Wellington to Carterton, bike to Gladstone. Camp at my friend's carbon sink patch of land near Longbush. Collaborate on a bush-restoration project e.g. tending the trees, track building. Plenty of stops for coffee, wine and picnics.
Day two: Ride to Martinborough for lunch then train from Featherston.
If it goes well, we'll repeat with more people later in summer.
The aim is to demonstrate that great holidays can be low carbon, and to learn about carbon sinks.
