I actually live in Sydney but my parents live in Napier and I want to help them get some form of renewable energy installed.  In OZ we have rebates, feed-in tariffs which make the business case much easier.

I was hoping to get some help with the following questions.  Is NZ likely to get a feed-in tariffs?  If I just go down the path of Solar hot water is there anything that we should do to ensure that we can add solar energy generation or wind at a later date?

Any advice would be appreciate.

Lee

Your big carbon/dollar benefits are likely to come from helping your parents reduce energy use, before you generate your own power. I would look at insulation, passive solar design adjustments, solar or heat pump water, appliances and air tightness. After that you could consider carbon efficient space heating, for example heat pump or wood burner (if practical for them). Finally generating by wind or PV. There is a firm in Taranaki who may be able to help and TalkIt in Wellington have PV systems, as do many others.
