Crack-up! What happens when you don't bike in the bike lanes?

Thanks Eli.

Grist always have great stuff. ..."Imagine getting a $3,000 to $12,000 tax rebate this year. Now imagine it coming again and again. Every year it grows by around a thousand dollars".  Wow!

Bikenomics 101! This is a series of articles about how cycling makes economic sense - both for an individual and for society. From a US perspective, it's looked at bike parking, health, energy, and the merit of destroying motorways. I liked the way it brings together some often-unconnected ideas. Check it out, yo: http://www.grist.org/article/series/bikenomics

This is exactly the sort of presentation we need other Councillors at Greater Wellington to see.  We have agreement for a report from officers, but it wouldnt be complete without this !

Thanks

RE: Wellington Bike on Bus Trials -

We are beyond trials! We have the proof that this sytem works - and it has been adopted around the world.

Beca (www.beca.com) with the funding provided by the NZTA recently completed research on the economics and demands of the Bike on Bus programme around New Zealand.   You can find the report here: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/research/reports/418/

However, with the attention that the report has had around the country - I believe it is critical to understand that the benefits of the Bike on Bus system do not simply come about with putting the racks on the buses. It really takes a whole system approach.

You can find a recent presentation that I delivered here on my LinkedIn page.

(hope all these URL's work)

Thanks and all the best -

and please dont hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments -

Cheers,

Jonathan

Greater Wellington Regional Council are investigating installing bike racks on buses. They've asked Cycling in Wellington about suitable routes for initial trials.

This is a great opportunity to help make Wellington a sustainable transport star and improve the livability and ride-ability of our lovely city. We'd love it if you'd come over and give us your route suggestions.

You may have come across this news item about Mario Kart symbols appearing in cycle lanes in Portland, Oregon:

Got me thinking that it would be interesting to embed 'easter eggs' in local cycle lanes – but make them informative, useful - as well as fun... Some ideas:
- motivational: "good pedaling" "you sexy cyclist you!"...
- practical: "watch out for the pothole" "always smile at polite drivers"
- statistical: "burning XX calories an hour" "saving XXkg of carbon per km"

Any other ideas??....
