What power does an individual have to effect the behaviour of the whole?
Can the motivations of individuals move communities?
Where do social movements begin?
These are poignant questions for our times. Whatever we strive to do as individuals we find ourselves pitted against movements and forces that dwarf us – climate, economics, social and political forces.
At Intersect’s Emergence evening we will explore these questions by investigating some examples from nature.
In nature we can find insights to inspire and enlighten our journeys. Scientific research into the behaviour of swarms has revealed fascinating insights into how the motivation of individuals effects swarm formation – whether birds, insects or fish. Locusts, for example, swarm because they all want to eat each other; other species want to protect each other. Huge shoals of sardines turn instantly in the water when a few “committed sardines” start swimming against the crowd.
From the simple motivations of the individuals, intricate swarm behaviour emerges.
We will attempt to create a human swarm and investigate how movements begin through some simple group games. We will investigate how we as individuals can change our communities. Be inspired and challenged by science. The evening itself will be emergent – who knows what could come of it?!
Come along and find out.
